A portrait of Mr. Pond

A portrait of Mr. Pond

It has been over a year since I posted a iOTW shot. For the new that stands for Image of the Week. Today I shot my first corporate portrait in a number of months. Traveling hasn’t really lent me the opportunity to do many of these.

During this shoot, I realized that I really do like taking portraits of people. There’s a certain magic about having someone’s attention for just that split second when they let you capture their sole and lock away a moment in their life just for you. I also realized how much freer I am when I hold the camera instead of mounting it to a tripod. I’ve never been comfortable shooting portraits on a tripod. There’s something to holding a massive camera in my hand. I liken it to a painter’s brush… only bigger, badder, and full frame. :-) I would even go so far as to say it completes me, but that would just be lame.

It worries me how ignorant we are of our rights as humans. For starters, the video above has only been viewed 4,451 times since it was uploaded over a year ago. Almost 7 billion people on the planet. Let’s be conservative and say that 1 billion have access to broadband. That’s serious right there. It is still even more serious if you were to tighten the pool down to 1 million people with enough access to broadband. Only 4,451 have viewed this one. Out of 1 million. There are five separate uploads of this same video with a total of only 8,401 views as of this posting. I guess everyone is distracted with Lady Gaga’s latest video, Alejandro with nearly 100 million views as of today.

Professor Philip Zimbardo giving a talk at the RSA Comment. The animations that go along with the talk really bring the subject matter to life. You can check out more of these vids on the RSA Animate site.

A few quotes caught my attention, notably in regard to technology and education – two topics I talk about with passion in relation to how I look at development in Africa:

“We are underestimating the power of technology in rewiring young people’s brains. Kids don’t wear wrist watches, they say ‘it is a single-function device. We don’t waste time with a single-function device…’”

And this:

“In America, a child drops out of school every 9 seconds… By the time a boy is 21, he has spent at least 10,000 hours playing video games alone, probably more watching pornography alone… it means they live in a world they create… their brains are being digitally rewired, which means they will never fit in a traditional analog classroom… Meaning it is boring. You control nothing. You sit there passively.”

You might not be able to follow my wild-haired brain as it thinks outside the box, but let me put this out there. Africa’s education system about to get an infusion of leap-frogging on a scale never before imagined. Fantastic things are possible when you are working with a carte blanche.

ANOTHER GEM:

Here’s another one by renowned philosopher Slavoj Zizek on charity and worth ruminating over: “First as Tragedy, Then as Farce

Should respect for the dead be a universal human right?

August 8, 2010

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a big fan of Communication Arts‘ annual issue of the best photograph’s of the year. For some reason, I’ve found myself missing the deadline to submission my own shots every year. I’ve come to accept it as annual ritual. I get the notice in the mail [...]

Thoughts on technology, development & Africa

August 7, 2010

While recovering from a particularly nasty cold/flu in Kampala, a buddy of mine in Nairobi asked me to record a few thoughts on the nexus of technology, development and Africa. If you listen closely, I sound like someone stuffed tissue in my nose and my dreads look like I need a weed whacker. This is [...]

I am still around…

August 7, 2010

I think it is funny that the most I’ll post here in this space is that I’ll resume posting here regularly again at some point. Have I done that yet? Of course not. To say I’ve been busy is a little bit of an understatement. Anyway, Project Diaspora got a new facelift. Go check it [...]

On the radio with Samasource founder Leila Charayath Janar

September 18, 2009

This morning I had an opportunity to be featured on The Hugh Macken Live radio show. Actually should I say, Leila Charayath Janar—who I interviewed last year at the Facebook Developer’s Garage in Uganda for Project Diaspora—was the featured guest. Myself, along with one Maria Umar from Pakistan were there for support. I have to [...]

Riots Rock London for 3rd day

September 17, 2009

London is in flames as a result of riots by supporters of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of England. Trouble started when Prime Minister Gordon Brown prevented the Queen from travelling to Scotland for an annual youth festival. The no nonsense British Prime Minister insisted that the Queen must seek permission from the leader of the [...]

So if you haven’t noticed, I’ve been a little busy. By busy, I mean real busy, but you ask, surely it doesn’t take but a second to blog a post right? Actually. It takes just a little more than a second because I am naturally ADD! With that I have this last-minute announcement. I submitted [...]

Africa’s Diaspora and the Cloud… and, er German Schadenfreude

September 4, 2009

Just arrived in Germany and I thought I’d pen a couple of thoughts on Frankfurt Airport. This airport has a warm fuzzy spot in my heart. 22 years ago, I flew through this very airport alone on my way to the States. I remember very little about it, but I can’t help but be a [...]

I know, I know… Awesome updates coming soon!

July 13, 2009

So I’ve been busy. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve left this here blog slightly unattended. I did publish a few articles over on Project Diaspora these past few months, but that’s not what’s been keeping me busy. I’ve had some really fantastic projects to shoot these past few months. And I’ve been meaning to add [...]

This just in: TMS Ruge Harpoons first assistant on the “Moby Dick” set!

July 13, 2009

Not content with being relegated to cleaning up the aftermath of a broken toilet, TMS Ruge went on a frothy rampage, chasing everyone around the set with the business end of a dirty mop, all the while yelling, “I got your Moby Dick right here! Smell some respect, bitches!” He later wrestled the half-naked Captain [...]

Happy Birthday dear ‘ol mum!

April 14, 2009

I was going through the gazillion photos I took on my trip this week and came across this little gem. I shot it at twilight, just as the sun was setting under heavy clouds. The nightly showers were prepping for a downpour upon the village where my mom stay. When the moon is not out, [...]

iOTW: Teresa gets hitched

Back when I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do when I grew up, I was working at a design temp at Sally Corporation headquarters, churning out sales catalogs ad nauseam. Hanging out with Texas Governor Rick Perry

March 10, 2009

Last Thursday I had the honor to once again photograph an event featuring Texas Governor Rick Perry presenting at the 2009 Tech Success Emerging Technology Fund (EFT) Awards. I’ve photograph the Governor on a number of occasions while he’s in North Texas. I am sure he’s starting to think I am the only one allowed [...]

iOTW: Birds of a feather, bird-drop together

February 13, 2009

iOTW is back and this image has been a favorite of mine from this past year. I spent about an hour sitting among the tourists in Amsterdam square. The kids were busy agitating the birds while the adults were busy feeding them. My goal was to capture flight. It’s amazing how fast these little [...]

Yes, I know, I’ve gone and done it yet again. I think tweaking this blog then promptyly abandoning any semblance of regular updates is like my past time. Truth is, I’ve been busy over there at PD. Blogging from BarCamp Jozi

October 20, 2008

I spent the past 12 days in Johannesburg, South Africa. Here’s an image I found, taken by Erik “White African” Hersman. We had a great time talking about all things mobile tech, security, and courtesy of Paul Cook, a cursory peek into string theory. My brain is still wobbly from all the intellectual intake.

iOTW: Life After Dark

October 18, 2008

Life after dark in Johannesburg is a mixture of contrasts. It is deceptively vacant and at peace,as it is a haven for crime. On my last day here, my fellow globe-trotting friend Robin took me on a night-time tour of the city, otherwise known as “getting-lost-on-the-way-from-Sofiatown”. We managed to park in the median in the [...]

iOTW: Have a cup on me

October 18, 2008

I couldn’t pass up this pot of tea that was keeping my tea warm as I was surfing the internet at the Mugg & Bean in Johannesburg’s Rosebank mall. Natural lighting and a bit of chiaroscuro for ya. Shooting found objects can be some of the best photography around. They offer unexpected flashes of inspiration. [...]
